ECCLESIASTES 12:8-12

NAS Bible
8) “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “all is vanity!”
Purpose
of the Preacher
9) In addition to being a wise man, the Preacher also taught
the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out and arranged many
proverbs. 10) The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write
words of truth correctly.
11) The words of wise men are like goads, and masters
of these collections are like well-driven nails; they are
given by one Shepherd. 12) But
beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and
excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body.
GNT
Bible
8) Useless, useless, said the Philosopher. It is all
useless.
The
Summing Up
9) But because the Philosopher was wise, he kept on teaching
the people what he knew. He studied proverbs and honestly tested their truth. 10) The Philosopher tried to find comforting words, but the
words he wrote were honest. 11) The
sayings of the wise are like the sharp sticks that shepherds use to guide
sheep, and collected proverbs are as lasting as firmly driven nails. They have
been given by God, the one Shepherd of us all.
12) My child, there is something else to watch out for. There
is no end to the writing of books, and too much study will wear you out.
Explanation
Everyone in faith knows that it’s vanity in this world beyond a certain extent.
Vanity & Material World - They are 2 faces
of the same coin.
Material things in
this world & whatever that we acquire are mere vanity.
As depicted in Luke
12:19-21
This
is what a man without God says:
19) Then I will say to myself,
Lucky man! You have all the good things you need for many years. Take life
easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!’
This
is what God says to such a man:
20) But God said to him, ‘You
fool! This very night you will have to give up your life; then who will get all
these things you have kept for yourself?’”
Explanation: The verse also shows the vanity and futility of
earthly riches, which cannot satisfy the soul or secure the future. The man had
accumulated many things, but he could not take them with him when he died. He
did not know who would inherit his possessions, or whether they would use them
wisely or foolishly. He had wasted his life on things that
did not matter, and he had no treasure in heaven.
E.g.:
i) Filthy things like gaining
hands with the help of cash.
ii) Encroachment to
others ‘IT’ for seeing.
Summary
21) And Jesus concluded, “This is
how it is with those
who pile up riches for themselves but are not rich in God's sight.”
Explanation: Only what is gained through
the right channels based on our own Lord will remain.
